A research project on growth forms and the functional
morphology of Early Devonian land plants is currently carried out in
cooperation
with Prof. Dr. Volker Mosbrugger (Geologisch-Paläontologisches
Institut,

Prof. Dr. Thomas N. Taylor (University of Kansas,
Lawrence,
KS, U.S.A.) worked in 1992/1993, 1994/1995, October-November 1996 and
November
1997 in Münster, first with financial support from DAAD (German
Academic
Exchange Programme), then as Humboldtpreis (Humboldt Award) recipient;
he currently hosts one of . He is incorporated in several of the running
research projects, particularly on the Early Devonian Rhynie Chert flora,
and this collaboration already resulted in a series of joint publications,
including several papers in Nature. Also in more recent years he has been
our guest (1998, 1999). Results of an expedition by Edith L. Taylor &
Thomas N. Taylor (Lawrence, KS, U.S.A.), Rubén Cúneo &
Ana Archangelsky (Trelew, Argentina), and Hans Kerp to Shackleton Glacier,
Antarctica, during the 1995-1996 austral summer have been presented at
the Annual Meeting of the Botanical Society of America in August 1998,
Baltimore (see abstract). |

Prof. Dr. Patricia G. Gensel (University of North
Carolina,
Chapel Hill, NC, U.S.A) visited Münster in 1992 and 1994 with financial
support DAAD and DFG in order to study Lower and Middle Devonian floras.
Another visit is planned. |

Prof. Dr. Manfred Barthel (Museum für Naturkunde,
Humboldt-Universität, Berlin) is one of the leading Rotliegend
palaeobotanists
with whom a firm cooperation is established on Permian floras and cuticular
analysis. |
|
The cooperation with Prof. Dr. Jean Broutin and Prof.
Dr. Pierre Freytet (Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France)
focuses on Upper Carboniferous and Permian floras, especially from the
Peri-Tethys area. Joint field work has been carried out in Morrocco (1994)
and Oman (1997, 2000). |

Prof. Gar W. Rothwell und Dr. Gene Mapes (Ohio University,
Athens, Ohio, U.S.A.) visited Münster in November 1996 to discuss
conifer phylogeny, as part of a NSF-funded research project. |

Prof. Dr. Dianne Edwards (Cardiff) visited Münster
in March 1997 to study Rhynie Chert plants. A joint paper (with Hagen Hass
and Hans Kerp) on the ecophysiology of the stomates early land plants has
been published in the Journal of Experimental Botany (see: Publications);
another visit is scheduled for September 2000. Miss. Kate Habgood,
one of her Ph.D. students visited Münster during the month of May
1998 to study Rhynie Chert coprolites. |

Results of a joint research project with Dr. Serge V.
Naugolnykh (Geological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow,
Russia) on Permian floras from the Ural Mountains have been published
recently.
He visited Münster in November 1997. DAAD enabled him a three-months
visit in Münster in 1998 for joint research on Permian floras. Serge
also participates in a project on Permian floras of North Greenland with
Prof. Dr. Robert H. Wagner and Sunia Lausberg. |

Dr. Monique Feist (Montpellier) visited Münster
in November 1997 to study Early Devonian Charophytes from the Rhynie Chert.
She returned in February 1998 to finish this joint research project that
is carried out together with Hagen Hass, Hans Kerp and Thomas N.
Taylor. |

Further cooperations exist with several universities, research
institutes, geological surveys and museums in Germany (e.g., Berlin,
Freiberg,
Chemnitz, Mainz, Dresden, Krefeld) and abroad (e.g., Aberdeen, Utrecht,
Pavia, Dijon, Montpellier, Oviedo, Trelew).
